You can book your driving theory test at www.gov.uk/book-theory-test or by calling the DVSA on 0300 200 1122 (open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm) at the cost of £23.

To avoid additional booking fees DO NOT book your driving theory test through any other method other than what is advised on this page.

The multiple choice section

You will be given 57 minutes to answer 50 multiple choice questions, most candidates find that this far exceeds the time that they require and have a lot of time left over. If you aren’t sure of an answer then you may “flag” the question and return to it later. Try to avoid reading back through your answers as it is likely that you will doubt yourself and start changing your answers to the wrong ones!

The hazard perception section

Following the multiple choice questions you will be offered a break of up to 3 minutes before starting the hazard perception test. You will be presented with 14 short clips where you are expected to respond to a “developing hazard” as soon as you see it happen.

A developing hazard is something that occurs for which you may need to brake or change course (steer). The maximum score is 5 per developing hazard and 13 clips contain 1 developing hazard and 1 clip has 2 developing hazards. The score it cumulative across the 14 clips and the pass mark is 44/75. You will score zero on the clip if you are found to be persistently clicking when no hazard is present as this could be deemed as cheating.
